Why do Roman shields in the movies always look like they’re made of weathered steel and not wood? Why are they never painted? How can this continually be incorrect? It’s one of the most obvious things that they should get right.

Budget, budget, budget…or they just don’t care. I have problems with movie about Rome where people are wearing costumes where they just don’t look comfortable in the clothes they are wearing. Sometimes I think they got them from COSTUMES OR US. The tunics are white, clean, and sparkly. Armor is a telling thing in movies. A cheap movie the helmets don’t even look like they fit the actor’s head. What I know about helmets, this is something that is fiddled with, tinkered and prodded into shape, because if you ever spent a day with 3 or 5 pounds on your head, a line develops across the forehead if its JUST NOT RIGHT. A modern note is this…I hate seeing movies where someone wears the black beret. It is suppose to sit flat on the side of your head, but most of the time its puffy…great for girl scouts but not for Soldier and especially not for an Army Ranger.
Armor is the second skin, and if the soldiers (actors) look a bit strange in the garb that they wear day after day, you know its not right, and it will not look right to the eye. Whether they live in the b.c. or in modern times, Soldiers take care of their stuff, and take great pains to make it fit.
